Liese stirred in bed and awoke. What was it?Again she heard the faint knock. Tap, tap, tap.Uneasily she slid off the bed and made her way to Papa and Mama’s room. Mama always eased her fears. Even at night. She stood beside the bed of her sleeping parents.Yasha was sleeping on a pad of blankets on the floor. The small room didn’t have space for his little bed.“Mama!” Liese whispered urgently. “Mama, what’s that noise?”Tap, tap, tap.“Someone is knocking on the window, Mama,” Liese said. “I’m afraid.”By now Papa and Mama were awake. They listened to the soft tapping on the glass. Papa went to the window and peered through the curtains. After a while he pushed the window slightly open.“What do you want?” he said into the darkness outside.“The Reds are coming!” a voice answered in low tones. “They are taking the babies this time! Only the boy babies. Hide your baby!”
